The additional information that the salesman are supposed to find about the prospective customers is their needs, likes, dislikes, habits, preferences, nature, behaviour, and economic status etc. Salesman can influence the buying behaviour of the prospects by collecting the important information about the prospects. A wise salesman tries to gather as much information as possible about the prospective buyers. Equipped with all possible information about the potential buyers, the salesman can easily plan his sales campaign efficiently. The salesman can prepare himself with the well planned sales presentation if he has detailed information about the potential customers. We can say that a salesman is in a position to present the products and services. He wants to sell with the surely of the needs of buyers on the basis of detailed information gathered about the prospects. Each of the preparations that are made before personally contacting the potential buyers is called pre-approach. The objective of the salesman is to make a successful sales presentation by knowing all about the nature of the prospect.
Attain favourable attention of the prospects and maintain interest so that the prospect will be ready to meet the salesman.
Maintain willingness of the prospect in favour of the purchase.
An approach can be successful only if these two objectives are achieved.
One of the important steps in the selling process is approach. It has been rightly quoted that a sale is won or lost during the interview. Approach influences the prospects to keep their door open or close. The prospects take the decision of the purchase during the first few minutes of the approach. And, the salesman is also able to identify that whether the prospect is really interested in the product or not. The importance of the approach is comparatively less, on the other hand, for selling expensive and luxurious goods and services; the importance of the approach is quite high. The importance can be described as follows:
Presentation and Demonstration: In salesmanship presentation means proper arrangement of the products so as to make the outward appearance of the shop attractive. Presentation includes the interior decoration of the shop, an attractive display and the proper placing of the products on the counter. Effective presentation is very necessary in selling goods since customers come to a counter attracted by the goods displayed in the window of the shop. Proper presentation of goods is significant in creating and maintaining the interest of the consumer for the product. Customers who enter even without the intention of purchasing and just to have a look at the goods attractively displayed, effective presentation attracts them towards the goods. A well-planned presentation can persuade such customers to purchase the product.
