There are still a number of employees who are unwilling to use bikes for official purposes. They commonly cite three reasons for avoiding the cyclescheme – unresolved problems, unsolvable problems and excuses. Along with practical problems, there are other mental and social problems, which prevent employees from using bikes to work. Often popular interpretation of such problems are incorrect and without any logic.

List of Excuses Provided by Employees to avoid Bikes to work

1. Cycling to office can be dangerous, especially when one is in a hurry 2. It will take more time than any other high speed alternatives to visit the office 3. There is no particular lane or usable routes for bikers 4. It is tiring to travel long distance from home to office 5. It is tough to ride back from the office after slogging the whole day in office 6. It becomes difficult to drop kids to school while going to office 7. It is difficult to ride under the scorching sun, freezing weather or during rain

Apart from these, many employees also complain of arriving in office in dirty, in their formal wear, which spoils their appearance. Some employees complain that it becomes difficult to carry the official papers, laptops and other important items, while riding on bikes. Parking the bike in the right place also becomes a major issue. For some, it looks unprofessional riding a bike in formal wear.

The impression that riding bikes to work can be dangerous is mainly provided by those who are hesitant of using cycle scheme. It becomes a problem especially when bikers
are running out of time. They tend to ride recklessly in order to travel in minimum time and avoid the traffic rules. As a result of that quite often they meet with an accident.

Speed is a major problem but seldom people drive below an average speed of 10 miles per hour. Often there is no particular lane dedicated for riders. It often becomes difficult to ride on the main roads during office hours where other vehicles are running at a high speed. Not only that, it becomes difficult to ride bikes in hot summer months with sweat running down the forehead. Rainy and winter months are equally difficult to manage. The cold winter breeze freezes the biker’s nerves and thus creates a lot of problems, especially vision problems. To protect themselves from rain most bikers use a raincoat but it becomes difficult to ride the bike wearing rain coat. This often spoils the official wear and creates a negative impression.

Bikers can also face problems with flat tyres, broken glasses, loss of other parts of the bike. As a result of this the employees often miss an important meeting or lose a contract. This creates a major problem, as it is not possible to get hold of a repair centre or a mechanic on the spot. It might also lead the bikers to spend a lot of money to manage such unexpected situations.

It often does not look impressive riding to office in formal wears. For all these reasons bike to work is yet to gain maximum popularity.
